This sensor type has been widely used for many years. Compared to gypsum blocks, it is insoluble in soil water and not affected by temperature, so it can be used in soil for many years. Generally, three are installed in groups to monitor the moisture situation in a layer at the same depth, or to monitor soil profile moisture at different depths. The sensor consists of two concentric electrodes embedded in a special matrix material, which is supported by a stainless steel mesh. The selected matrix material reflects the maximum change in electrical resistance of the produced crops within the growth range. The soil moisture is continuously absorbed or released by sensors, and the resistance between electrodes changes. The measured resistance is converted into pressure to read the soil moisture suction reading.
