The Karl Fischer titration method involves the following five basic steps for each sample measurement: 1. Inject a portion of solvent into the titration cell first; 2. Titrate a portion of Karl Fischer reagent to achieve equilibrium; 3. Inject the tested sample; 4. Titrate Karl Fischer reagent into the titration cell again; 5. Discharge waste liquid. Simply put, it means changing the reagent every time a measurement is taken. This method calculates the moisture content based on the amount of Karl Fischer reagent injected and the titration degree of the reagent, as Karl Fischer reagent is affected by factors such as environmental humidity, light, and sealing, and the titration degree is constantly changing, resulting in measurement errors. During the testing process, every time a measurement is made, the waste liquid used last time needs to be discharged and a new Karl Fischer reagent needs to be titrated, causing pollution to the environment. The consumption of reagents is high, the operation is complicated, and the measurement accuracy is low.
The automatic volumetric moisture analyzer also requires the above five basic steps, except for the addition of functions such as automatic titration and automatic waste liquid discharge.

The Karl Fischer Coulombic method (coulometric method) for measuring trace moisture is a method that involves injecting a sample into an electrolytic cell at equilibrium. The instrument automatically performs electrolysis based on the amount of water in the sample to reach equilibrium again. The moisture content is calculated based on the amount of electricity consumed during electrolysis, and the results are displayed digitally on the instrument, resulting in higher accuracy and faster measurement speed. The reagents used in the Coulombic method can be continuously used for a long time without frequent replacement. The amount of reagents used is low, the measurement cost is low, and the operation is simple.
